Memorial website in the memory of your loved one
This memorial website was created in the memory of our loved one, Aaron McKinney who was born in St. Louis, Missouri on April 28, 1989 and passed away on October 31, 2004 at the age of 15. We will remember him forever.

Hi, my name is Dani, and I would like to introduce you to a very special young man.  Aaron was my beautiful, loving 15 year old son.  We lost him on October 31 in a tragic car accident when I lost control of my SUV and went off the road, rolling the vehicle multiple times.  Aaron was thrown from the truck, and we are told that he died instantly, due to a massive head injury.  But this isn’t what I want you to know about Aaron.  What I want you to know is what a wonderful young man, yet very much still a boy he was.  Being a normal teenager, some days he was my biggest challenge, and other days, he was my best friend.  He was never ashamed of me and quite often bragged to his friends about what a “cool” mom he had.

Aaron played the alto saxophone in the high school band, and after 3 years and hardly no practice, still managed to be second chair.  He had just started marching band this year, his first year of high school and fully enjoyed the road trips they got to take to games and competitions to perform.  Aaron’s goal in life was to join the Army or Navy and be in their band.  He knew it was going to take a lot hard work and dedication, and he wasn’t afraid of either.

Probably Aaron’s greatest love in life was soccer.  We live in a small town, so unfortunately our school does not have a soccer team, but he played Optimist soccer for a number of years.  In his second season playing, Aaron’s team not only won first place in the season and the end of the season tournament, but Aaron was also voted the Most Valuable Player of the whole league by all the coaches in his division as well as the referees.  Aaron also volunteered as a soccer referee for the younger kids who played.

Aaron also enjoyed hunting and fishing with his dad.  Every year, a big deer hunt was planned and the two of them would take off for the weekend, hoping to bring home that big buck.  He never did.

The most important thing I want to tell you about Aaron is his smile and sense of humor.  Aaron loved to play practical jokes and would do just about anything to make people laugh.  With his sparkling blue eyes, his smile and laughter could brighten up a whole room.

We have two other children, 13 year old boy/girl twins, who both adored and despised their big brother as all siblings do! I say this because I don’t want to paint an unrealistic picture of Aaron, as I don’t feel that would do his memory justice – like I said, he was a normal teenager.  Sure, he smarted off to me, and didn’t always do his chores, but he was home every night and loved to be part of the family.

When I was in the emergency room at the hospital and the doctors told me that Aaron wasn’t going to make it, there was never any thought to my decision to donate Aaron’s organs.  I knew exactly what he would want.  Many times Aaron would walk to our neighbor’s house and see if they needed any work done.  He was always willing to help everybody.  It also helps us so much to know that a part of Aaron does live on and is helping others.

We are also very proudand happy to announce that a section of Route B in Bollinger County (the road in which the accident happened) is to be named the Aaron McKinney Memorial Highway.  A special thanks to Belinda and Angie at MODoT for al their hard work and dedication.  Also a big thank you to Senator Crowell for sponsoring this.

His legacy
A friend sent this poem to me, and now whenever I see a dragonfly, I think of Aaron.
Once in a little pond, in the muddy water under the lily pads, there lived a little water beetle community of water beetles.  They lived a simple and comfortable life in the pond with few disturbances and interruptions.

Once in a while, sadness would come to the community when one of their fellow beetles would climb the stem of the lily pad and would never be seen again.  They knew when this happened; their friend was dead, gone forever.

Then, one day, one little water beetle felt an irresistible urge to climb up that stem.  However, he was determined that he would not leave forever.  He would come back and tell his friends what he had found at the top.

When he reached the top and climbed out of the water onto the surface of the lily pad, he was so tired, and the sun felt so warm, that he decided he must take a nap.  As he slept his body changed and when he woke up, he had turned into a beautiful blue-tailed dragonfly with broad wings and a slender body designed for flying.

So, fly he did!  And, as he soared he saw the beauty of a whole new world and a far superior way of life to what he had never known existed.

Then he remembered his beetle friends and how they were thinking by now that he was dead.  He wanted to go back to tell them, and explain to them that he was now more alive than he had ever been before.  His life had been fulfilled rather than ended.

But, his new body would not go down into the water.  He could not get back to tell his friends the good news.  Then he understood that their time would come, when they too, would know what he now knew.  So, he raised his wings and flew off to his joyous new life!
I believe this is a gift straight from Aaron
He Only Took My Hand

Last night while I was trying to sleep,
My son's voice I did hear
I opened my eyes and looked around,
But he did not appear.

He said: "Mom you've got to listen,
You've got to understand
God didn't take me from you, mom
He only took my hand.

When I called out in pain that day,
The instant that I died,
He reached down and took my hand,
And pulled me to His side.

He pulled me up and saved me
From the misery and pain.
My body was hurt so badly inside,
I could never be the same.

My search is really over now,
I've found happiness within,
All the answers to my empty dreams
And all that might have been.

I love you all and miss you so,
And I'll always be nearby.
My body's gone forever,
But my spirit will never die!

And so, you must all go on now,
Live one day at a time.
Just understand-
God did not take me from you,
He only took my hand.
We miss you Boo

Little I knew that morning,
God was going to call your name,
In life we loved you dearly,
In death we do the same.

It broke our hearts to lose you,
You did not go alone,
For part of me went with you,
The day God called you home.

You left us beautiful memories,
Your love is still our guide,
And though we cannot see you,
You are always by our side.

Our family chain is broken,
and nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again.
When You Hear The Music by: Jennifer Wiesman

When you hear the music,
Listen to me-
I’m the one who’s playing.

When you hear the music,
Sense me whisper-
Listen to what I’m saying.

Although it seems I’m far away:
Out of reach, out of touch...
I’m never very far away
‘Cause I love you oh so much.

When you hear the music,
Feel the beat-
I’m here beside you.

When you hear the music,
Embrace me-
I will guide you.
